Surprise! I'm Awake!

I've read a lot of books in the last 11 months... and maybe I'll get around to talking about them eventually. For now - I'm back and this is what I'm reading, right MEOW. (Supertroopers? Anyone? Just me? OK, moving on then)

I've been seeing this book forever, all over the internet, and for some reason I decided it wasn't really that exciting...even though everything about it sounds exactly like a book I'd like. I think maybe I was afraid I wouldn't enjoy it, and then where would I be? Let down by the internet....which has never, ever happened, to anyone, anywhere...ahem.

Anyway, I went on a mini book buying spree a few weeks ago and this was one that I suddenly decided I needed. I was in the middle of a few library books so I didn't rush to read it. In fact, when I finished up my library books last week, this isn't even the first of my purchases that I chose.

First I read The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, by Jennifer E. Smith. Which was A delightful, if brief, tale of 17 year old Hadley who is flying to London for her father's wedding to a woman she's never met and Oliver, the (of course) attractive British boy (with the requisite tousled hair - wait, now that I've typed that I can't remember if she actually describes him that way or I'm just picturing it...no, I'm pretty sure she mentions his hair) that she meets at the airport, and what happens over the next 24 hours.

It was a quick read (in fact it took me less than the 24 hours that the book covers) but it was fun. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone that enjoys YA Chick Lit or Teen Movies a la the Disney Channel or ABC Family. I'm looking at you Doc P. This was definitely one of those times when I kept thinking, "Oh, so-and-so needs to read this book, (s)he would totally enjoy it."

But, back to Anna and the French Kiss - I started this book on Tuesday night, but because this has been a fairly busy week, only the read the first 4 chapters before I had to force myself to go to bed. After another busy day yesterday, I finally got home from swim practice and was able to settle in to read some more. This was a mistake, because once I started reading, I really didn't want to turn the light out. I'm about half way done now, and there was nothing I wanted to do less than quit reading and go to work. I'm sure that it's probably a little bit crazy to consider taking a sick day so you can stay in bed and read, but the impulse does cross my mind once in a while. This book is in the same vein as The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, but its MORE. Longer, both page wise and plot wise (I mean, there's only so much you can cover in 24 hours), yes, but also, in some way that I can't quite put my finger on yet. It's just MORE.

Anna is sent to boarding school in France for her senior year at an American school in Paris. I just feel like this book doesn't need any more build up than that. How could that not be a fun story? I'm definitely going to pick up the next two books (Lola and the Boy Next Door and Isla and the Happily Ever After)

Also, as a side note - I am in love with the textural experience of this book. The cover feels really good. And the colors (of this one and the two I don't have yet) are so pretty. I'm glad I bought it instead of picking it up at the library!
