Zombies vs. Unicorns

Yeah - this was kind of awesome. Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier gathered a collection of short stories featuring, alternately, Zombies or Unicorns to finally decide the age old question of which is better.

There were only a few authors that I've previously read (both of whom I really like), but quite a few names that I recognized as current prominent YA novelists.

My one complaint regarding the book is that I felt like some of the stories were unnecessarily vulgar. Don't get me wrong - I'm not opposed to graphic when I feel like it serves a purpose, and the use of PG-13+ language doesn't really offend me. But, using violence, sexuality, or foul language just to be edgy and shocking is mostly annoying. Not to mention that this book is shelved in the YA section and marketed to teens. I know the inside cover says for teens 14+, but for reals, when did that ever stop a kid from picking up something that wasn't really appropriate?

My last paragraph aside, this is NOT a negative review of this book. I thought it was hilarious and I really enjoyed it. Two of my favorites stories were, no surprise, by the two authors that I've already read - I like them for a reason. I especially enjoyed: "The Children of the Revolution", Maureen Johnson (Team Z); "Princess Prettypants", Meg Cabot (Team U); and "The Care and Feeding of Your Baby Killer Unicorn", Diana Peterfreund (Team U). And despite enjoying the unicorn stories, I'm gonna have to say I probably fall in the Zombie camp. I really just feel like there is more potential there. And unicorns, aside from the killer ones, are just a little too prissy for me.

Conclusion: If you think the title sounds hilarious and amusing, you will probably enjoy at least parts of this book. If you think the entire thing sounds ridiculous (and not in a good way) you should probably just keep walking....nothing to see here.

So readers, if you have (or do) read this - which team are you!?!
